WU4W, with a twist

Talison Greenbushes get physical with pre-work stretches

01/03/2013

Recently, Talison Greenbushes contacted Worksite Fitness and Rehabilitation (WFR) to assist with the roll out a Warm Up 4 Work program on site.  WFR have been working with Greenbushes since 2008, providing a range of Healthy Lifestyle Program initiatives including Back Care Training, Emergency Responce Team fitness appraisals, job task analysis, ergonomic assessments and Functional Capacity Evaluations.

The most recent program involved an Exercise Physiologist from the WFR team spending one week on site attending toolbox meetings to roll out the program to the staff, training stretch leaders to facilitate the program on a daily basis and developing posters.

But the WU4W program at Talison Greenbushes had a novel twist.  Each person on site was provided with a smart toner, a resistance band that allowed for resistance training to be included in the WU4W program.  Damien Jameson, Safety and Training Officer, advised that the concept came from a conference that he attended in 2012. “We were introduced to the use of resistance bands at a safety conference in Perth by staff from Chevron, who were a great help in assisting us with our program.  We then developed the program with WFR to suit our particular circumstances”.

Introducing this piece of equipment into the program enhanced the staff’s interest and enthusiasm for the program, as well as increasing the benefits of the WU4W program, as Damien explained “The resistance bands are a great tool … they allow a WU4W program to extend into muscle toning and general fitness and we have found, as with other programs we’ve run on-site, that a device adds weight to any program (no pun intended). The Smart Toner resistance Bands are of very high quality, portable and easy to use. With the addition of a door anchor and a Smart Toner guide ( either hard copy or dvd) a resistance band can become a home gym in a bag. A gift such as a resistance band can be a real motivational tool and we’ve found that our people are very appreciative of the effort we have gone to in order to ensure our workforce is fit and safe.”
